He is a MacArthur Fellow(2008), and the author of a number of award-winning popular science books. Dr. Montgomery has been featured in documentary films, TV and radio programs including NOVA and All Things Considered.

Dr. Montgomery appeared on SftPublic's Contemporary Science Issues and Innovations on February 08, 2017 to discuss his book, co-authored with biologist-consultant Anne Bikle:Microbes Matter: From Healthy Soil to Your Healthy Gut and two of Dr. Montgomery's other books for the general public on the living nature of soil and its role in sustaining life --and good health. In this program the husband-wife authors describe how developing their backyard garden "from scratch" over several years made them connect the dots between a healthy microbial base in soil and a healthy microbial community in our gut. They showed how the immune system is very much dependent on a healthy microbial community in the gut.
